On Monday November 12th, internet traffic that was supposed to route via Google's Cloud Platform was going through Russia, China and Nigeria. The traffic misdirection, better known as a border gateway protocol (BGP) hijacking, lasted about an hour and a half on Monday evening. Now we know this incident turned out to be an unfortunate mistake. A Google spokesperson said that the company didn't see signs of malicious hijacking. The mistake was done by MainOne the Nigerian ISP administrators who accidentally caused the problem. Google did not reveal how many users were affected, though issues reported from the UK, France and the US. This incident become particularly suspicious as internet traffic was being sent to the Chinese government’s internet provider, China Telecom.
